Commonly asked Q&A's
Q: WHY HIRE A PRO?
You may know plenty of tips and tricks to apply your makeup for everyday wear, but you’ll find that hiring a pro makeup artist is critical part of your wedding or portrait session! It takes an artful eye to see the beauty and potential in each face. A pro artist is not only trained to apply flawless, enduring makeup, they are also skilled in the art of making you feel at ease in every aspect of the process from detailed wedding day timelines to working with you to create a stunning makeup style that will transcend time.
Professional makeup artists know what products to use, where to use them and in what intensity to ensure you look good face to face, as well as in your pictures. They use a wide range of products from vastly different lines to achieve a flawless look. Education and experience are also a key factors. A professional makeup artist has training exclusively in the art of makeup and will have years of experience in the field. Simply because one is a licensed cosmetologist, doesn’t mean one is fully trained in makeup application (most cosmetology schools don’t offer much makeup training) or has the experience necessary to provide a perfect application every time.
It’s good to have an expert opinion on a day that can be so exciting and emotional. You may be too nervous to apply your makeup properly within the tight time frame of a wedding or portrait session. A pro will take more time and be more purposeful in applying makeup than you would at home; they will come to your location, be punctual and efficient and ensure you are ready for your photos with time to spare. Talk about a stress free environment!
To sum it up, I like this analogy to bring my point home; behind every beautiful movie star, singer or model, there is a talented and experienced makeup artist working hard to ensure they look great in every picture that is taken. Your wedding or portrait session is your mini celebrity moment and you should look and feel as amazing as those stars. Hiring a pro makeup artist is one way to guarantee that!
Q: I DON’T WEAR A LOT OF MAKEUP ON A DAILY BASIS… SHOULD I STILL HIRE A PROFESSIONAL FOR MY WEDDING?
Absolutely! You don’t have to wear a lot of makeup on your wedding day to look beautiful, it just needs to be applied correctly and with the appropriate products. If you don’t want to look too “made up” for your wedding, I can give you a very soft, natural bridal look. It is most important on this day that your makeup lasts, looks great in photographs, makes you feel beautiful and is applied flawlessly to make you feel and look your best on this very special day.
Q: I LOVE YOUR WORK! WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY HAIR & MAKEUP SERVICES WITH YOU?
In demand vendors book up very quickly, so as soon as you have a date and venue set, please reach out to check availability. During peak bridal season (May – Oct), we often book a year and a half in advance. This doesn’t mean we won’t have your date available if it’s closer than that, but it’s best to reach out to us as soon as possible.
Q: HOW SOON DO YOU NEED TO KNOW THE TOTAL NUMBER OF PEOPLE WANTING SERVICES?
We need to know the total number of people for hair and makeup services at the time that you book us with a signed contract. The number of artists/stylists and length of time we reserve for you is based off of this figure. We are always happy to add on additional services after initial contract signing as long as we have availability to do so, but that is not always possible. We can only guarantee services that are included on the initial contract.
Q: WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY TRIAL?
We recommend scheduling your trial 1-2 months prior to your wedding. Best results are achieved when your hair is the same length/cut/style and your skin is a similar tone/texture/condition as to how it will be on your wedding day. Trials are held at either our Elmhurst or Hinsdale salon location on Sundays please contact us to book your trial date. Trials typically run an hour per service
Q: MAY I DO A HAIR AND MAKEUP TRIAL RUN BEFORE I COMMIT?
Absolutely! We want you to be 100% comfortable with your decision. When scheduling a trial run prior to booking your wedding with us, we will send you an invoice for the full amount of the trial that must be paid in full to confirm the booking. If you are unable to keep the appointment, and give us at least 24 hours advance notice of cancellation, this amount will be refunded back to you.
Also, please keep in mind that we do not hold a date without a retainer and signed contract, so your wedding date will still be available for others to book in the meantime. We also recommend scheduling a preview run a month or two prior to your wedding as well, as a lot of differences can occur to your skin and hair from season to season, and we can not guarantee that the same products we used on you at a trial run several months before your wedding will still be the best products for you on your wedding day.
Q: HOW LONG DOES A BRIDAL PREVIEW RUN TAKE? WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE?
The preview run usually takes around an hour per service. When you first arrive we will talk briefly about what it is you are looking for – any particular looks you have in mind, the look & feel of your wedding, the style of your gown, how much makeup you wear on a regular basis. This will allow us to come up with the perfect look together for your big day! It’s very common for a bride to not be sure of what style she would like for her wedding and that’s okay! I will work with you to create a look that you are 100% happy with and absolutely love! I always suggest to send or have an "inspiration photo" to get or have an idea of they style you want to try out. During the application itself we’ll chat and get to know each other. Once your look has been finalized we’ll write everything down and take a couple pictures so we can duplicate it on your wedding day.
Q: DO YOU OFFER TRADITIONAL MAKEUP INSTEAD OF AIRBRUSH? IS IT LESSER PRICED?
If you have someone in your bridal party who would prefer to have their foundation traditionally applied rather than airbrushed (we wouldn’t know why!), we are more than happy to accommodate them. We use the same products whether applied by hand or by airbrush, so the pricing is the same. We do not up-charge for airbrushing as many artists do.
Q: HOW LONG WILL A MAKEUP APPLICATION LAST?
The products we use are designed to last 12-16 hours with minimal touch-ups necessary. Most products are waterproof and many are suitable for HD film/TV and that means they will last throughout your entire day while still looking and feeling incredibly natural!
Q: HOW LONG DOES A WEDDING DAY APPLICATION TAKE?
On the wedding day, both hair and makeup applications take anywhere from 30 – 45 minutes each per person, depending on the desired look, client’s skin condition and hair length/thickness, and other variables.
Q: DO YOU COVER TATTOOS, SCARS, BIRTHMARKS? HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Absolutely! This is something that needs to be discussed with us in advance, however. A special kind of makeup is required for this type of coverage, so please let us know so we can bring it along with us. The cost varies depending on size and level of coverage required. Location is also a factor. Please contact us for a customized quote
Q: WHY SHOULD I ENCOURAGE MY BRIDAL PARTY TO ALSO HAVE THEIR MAKEUP DONE?
I think it's very important, and imperative to the beautiful outcome of your wedding photos to encourage the members of your bridal party to also opt to have their makeup done by a professional, and ideally by the same professional makeup artist that is doing yours. This ensures that your photos of everyone in the bridal party, (which I am sure are very expensive to begin with!) have a cohesive look, and they reflect the mood and theme that you desire.
Q: HOW DO I RESERVE MY WEDDING DAY TIME SLOT?
To book us for your wedding day, we require a signed contract and a non-refundable deposit. With the ease of today’s technology, we can do everything digitally! Once your date is reserved, we can schedule your preview run prior to your wedding.
THE FINE PRINT:
A signed contract along with a $100 or $200 deposit is required for all wedding bookings and no time slot can be held without both these items.
Q: WHAT TYPE OF PRODUCTS DO YOU USE?
I use a variety of products including MAC, Too Faced Tarte Urban Decay Anastasia Benefit, Smashbox etc., as well as some you might not recognize that are formulated for HD film and TV. For airbrushing I use a variety of different brands and formulas including Temptu and Dinair and I have water-based silicon-based and alcohol-based depending on your skin type.
Q: SHOULD I GET FALSE LASHES?
I use false lashes on about 97% of our clientele and they make a BIG impact! I ALWAYS suggest them especially for weddings, I always consider that you will most likely shed a tear or two so it limits the mascara running down your face! Although most mascaras are waterproof, they are not tear-proof! They truly do complete the look and I apply them to pretty much every adult age.
Q: CAN YOU PROVIDE MAKEUP FOR LARGE WEDDING PARTIES?
Yes, I can accommodate as many people as you have in your party.
As makeup artists we often hear the question, "What is the difference between airbrush makeup and regular makeup?" Better yet, "What is airbrush makeup?" Whether you're newly engaged or just shopping around for your local top makeup artist, or even hunting down the best makeup products for your wedding day- it's important to have a clear idea of the benefits and disadvantages both traditional makeup and airbrush makeup can provide. Here’s a quick overview of what you can find below:
What is the MAIN difference between traditional makeup and airbrush makeup? The way the product is applied is the key distinction between the two beauty services. Traditional makeup is applied by hand and can be worked into the skin with a brush, beauty blender, or sponge. The finish of traditional makeup can vary from natural with a dewy glow or matte with full coverage. Multiple traditional products such as powder, bronzer, and blush can be used in conjunction with traditional foundation based on your preference.
Airbrush makeup is a fine mist of controlled air that pushes out color (foundation) with an air compressor and gun. The foundation consistency is thinner than your traditional foundation allowing for a soft mist and steady stream of air to create an even product finish. The foundation can be sprayed onto the face for a flawless coverage and long wear. The makeup can also be applied with the intention of a soft natural look. Different airbrush products can be used for foundation, bronzer, blush, and highlight. Think of it as a fun approach to extended wear foundation.
Some ladies are under the impression airbrush makeup only provides a light natural finish and others have suggested the product only gives you a heavy finish. I say, it's all in the artist behind the application.
Imagine if you were spraying paint across a white wall in your bedroom. We're repainting this wall white to freshen it up and make it pop again. The previously painted white wall displays every little detail, mark, & ding. Naturally, we want our wall to be perfect and flawless again. It does not mean we want it to be a totally different color nor do we want a heavy amount of paint slapped on. The overall goal is to bring the wall back to life again by giving it a fresh look. The same idea goes into play for airbrush makeup, traditional makeup, and perfecting the skin for a flawless finish.
Like traditional makeup, airbrush makeup has an assortment of formulas based on the finish you are trying to achieve. When it comes to flawless makeup (whether it's traditional or airbrush) the overall finish is heavily based on skin prep and the artist. For instance, if someone is oily we would not apply a heavy hydrating cream but rather opt for a light lotion and matifying primer before the makeup. We base our application choice on the desired effect from the client and disadvantages of each technique.
PRO's AND CON'S
flawless natural finish
non-comodegenic (it won't clog your pores)
does not transfer
offers a bond that will stay strong for 6 to 8 hours (realistically).
the product doesn't work work well with sunburn, excess hair, or dry skin.
The fine mist will pick up any fine hairs or dry skin patches.
touch ups will break down the silicone bond
We’ve had clients love their airbrush makeup look so much they want to know where can they buy a machine for themselves. So the question is, “Do you wear airbrush makeup everyday?” My answer is YES. I personally love the product because it does not budge and it feels like I have nothing on my skin. For our brides, we use the Temptu or Dinair SB & WB formula. The silicone base and water base makeup holds up nicely when it’s wet and binds to the skin for a 8-12 hour wear.
AIRBRUSH WEDDING MAKEUP BEFORE AND AFTER
Both airbrush and traditional makeup applications are great options for an important event. The key factor for amazing wedding day makeup is the person behind the service. Make sure your local makeup artist has a clear understanding of both makeup applications and the look you are trying to achieve. During the inquiry stage ask as many questions as possible. Questions help create a clear line of communication and it makes our job easier as wedding stylists.
